In 2002, my design was chosen among over 50 entries as the winner of a contest to create a memorial honoring Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) highway workers who were killed on the job. With contributions from VDOT employees and citizens, the memorial was built in 2003 on one of Virginia's most scenic sites on Interstate 64 near Afton Mountain. The site provides a place where family members, friends and colleagues can reflect on their loss and where the traveling public can become more aware of sacrifices made by state highway transportation workers.
